Download YouTube Thumbnails
Download the thumbnail of any YouTube video in every resolution.
Your data is never sent to any server.
The YouTube thumbnail downloader fetches the cover image of any video in all its resolutions, from maximum HD quality down to standard. Paste the URL, preview and download with one click.
The images load straight from YouTube’s servers, just as they do when you watch the video on its site; this page keeps no copy.
The available resolutions
| Quality | Size | When it exists |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum (HD) | 1280 × 720 | If the video was uploaded in HD |
| Standard | 640 × 480 | If the video was uploaded at that resolution or higher |
| High | 480 × 360 | Always |
| Medium | 320 × 180 | Always |
The 640 × 480 and 480 × 360 versions are 4:3, so a widescreen video gets black bars at the top and bottom. For a clean cover image, use the maximum when it is available.
The most common use is recovering the thumbnail of your own channel when you no longer have the original file, or illustrating a review of a video with its cover.

Frequently asked questions
Which YouTube URL formats does it support?
All the common ones, youtube.com/watch?v=…, the short youtu.be/…, shorts (youtube.com/shorts/…) and URLs with extra parameters like playlists or timestamps.
Why aren't some thumbnails in HD?
The maximum resolution (1280×720) only exists if the creator uploaded the video in high definition. For old or low-quality videos, the best available version may be smaller.
Where do the thumbnails come from?
Directly from YouTube's public servers, which serve each thumbnail in several preset resolutions. This site only builds the links; it stores no images.
Can I use the downloaded thumbnails freely?
No. The thumbnail belongs to the person who made the video. Using it to illustrate a review or commentary on that video is generally covered by fair use or quotation rights; for anything else, such as a cover image or an ad, you need their permission.
Does it work with private or deleted videos?
No. Only public or unlisted videos have accessible thumbnails. For private videos, YouTube exposes no image.
