Typing Speed Test
Measure your typing speed in words per minute (WPM) and your accuracy.
Your data is never sent to any server.
The typing speed test measures how many words per minute you type and how accurately. You copy a sample text, watch your figures live and get your result when you finish, with your best score saved in the browser.
What it measures
| Figure | What it is |
|---|---|
| WPM | Correct characters per minute divided by 5 |
| Accuracy | Share of typed characters that match the sample |
| Errors | Typed characters that do not match |
Because a word counts as 5 keystrokes, the result is comparable with any other test that uses the same convention, which is the usual one.
How to improve
Speed comes by itself once you stop looking at the keyboard. If you still do, it is worth slowing down for a few weeks to learn the ten-finger position, with your index fingers on F and J, which have a small raised bump so you can find them without looking. You will be slower than now at first, but you will soon beat your old score. Practise for a few minutes every day rather than an hour once a week, and put accuracy first: every corrected mistake costs more time than typing a little more slowly.

Frequently asked questions
What is WPM?
Words per minute. By convention, a word is 5 keystrokes including spaces, so results can be compared between texts with long or short words. Only correctly typed characters count: typing fast with mistakes does not raise the figure.
What is a good typing speed?
People who type every day at a computer usually land between 35 and 45 WPM. Above 60 is the speed of a fluent touch typist, and the fastest people go beyond 100 while keeping accuracy high.
How is accuracy calculated?
By comparing each character left on screen with the sample. If you delete a mistake and fix it, it no longer counts as an error, although the time spent correcting lowers your WPM.
Why can't I paste text?
Because the test measures what you type. Pasting the text would produce an impossible score.
