Unix Timestamp to Date Converter
Convert a Unix timestamp into a readable date in local time, UTC and ISO 8601.
Your data is never sent to any server.
The Unix timestamp to date converter turns any epoch into a readable date: local time, UTC, ISO 8601 format and relative time. It works out on its own whether the number is in seconds or milliseconds.
Reading the number at a glance
The length of a timestamp tells you almost everything before you convert it:
| Digits | Unit | Example | Lands on |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | seconds | 1700000000 | Nov 2023 |
| 13 | milliseconds | 1700000000000 | Nov 2023 |
| 9 or fewer | seconds, older date | 100000000 | Mar 1973 |
If a 13-digit value is mistakenly read as seconds, the date lands tens of thousands of years in the future.
Where you run into them
In the responses of almost any API, in the date columns of many databases and in
server logs. A very common case is JWTs: their exp and iat claims are
timestamps in seconds, and converting them is the quick way to see whether a
token has expired or when it was issued.
The Relative row saves you the mental arithmetic: it tells you straight away whether the moment was three hours ago or is a week away.
How to use Timestamp to Date
- 1
Paste the timestamp
Enter the number in the input field. The tool accepts timestamps in seconds (10 digits) or milliseconds (13 digits) and detects the format automatically.
- 2
Use "Now" if you need it
The "Now" button inserts the timestamp of the current moment, handy for comparing against a value you are debugging.
- 3
Read every representation
You get the date in your local time, in UTC, in ISO 8601 format and as relative time (how long ago or how far ahead it is).
- 4
Copy the format you need
Each row has its own copy button. Local time uses your device's time zone.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Unix timestamp?
The number of seconds elapsed since 1 January 1970 at 00:00 UTC, the moment known as the epoch. It is the standard way of storing dates in operating systems, databases and APIs.
How do I know whether my timestamp is in seconds or milliseconds?
By its length. Current timestamps have 10 digits in seconds and 13 in milliseconds. The tool detects it on its own, so you can paste either one without changing a setting.
Why don't local time and UTC match?
Because a timestamp always measures an instant in UTC, while local time applies your device's time zone on top. The same timestamp is the same instant everywhere, but it reads differently in each zone.
What is ISO 8601 format?
The international date standard, shaped like 2024-11-14T22:13:20Z. It is readable, sorts correctly as plain text and is the usual format in APIs and JSON files.
Is a negative timestamp valid?
Yes. A negative value represents an instant before 1970. For example, -86400 is 31 December 1969.
What happens in 2038?
Systems storing the timestamp in signed 32-bit integers will overflow on 19 January 2038. Modern systems use 64 bits, whose range spans billions of years.
