Word and Character Counter

Count the words in a text and get a list of the most common ones, along with the reading time.

Your data is never sent to any server.

The word counter analyses your text instantly: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and reading time. It also shows which words you repeat most, which is usually what gives away a text written in a hurry.

Common length limits

WhereLimit
LinkedIn headline220 characters
Instagram caption2,200 characters
Page title in Googleabout 60 visible characters
Meta description in Googleabout 155 visible characters
Academic abstract150–300 words, depending on the journal

Google’s figures are not fixed limits: the search engine truncates by pixel width, so a title full of wide letters is cut sooner. X counts in its own way too: any link takes 23 characters whatever its length, and emoji count double.

Repeated words

A text can be exactly the right length and still read badly because it keeps reaching for the same words. The most repeated words list finds them at a glance, and density tells you how much they weigh: if a meaningful word goes above 3 or 4% of a long text, you can probably swap it for a synonym or rephrase a sentence.

How to use Word Counter

Frequently asked questions

How are words counted?

A word is anything between spaces or line breaks that contains at least one letter or digit. So well-known and 2026 each count as one word, and a lone dash between spaces does not count.

Do emoji count as one character or two?

As one, which is what you see on screen. Some programs and social networks count them as two, because they take two text units internally, so their count may come out slightly higher.

How are sentences and paragraphs counted?

A sentence ends with a full stop, an exclamation mark, a question mark or an ellipsis; several in a row count as one ending. A paragraph is every line that has text on it, whether or not there is a blank line in between.

How is reading time calculated?

At 200 words per minute, a cautious average for silent reading by an adult, rounded to the nearest minute.

What is a word's density?

The share of the text's total words that it accounts for. If journey appears 6 times in a 300-word text, its density is 2%. It helps you spot repetition that wears the reader out.

Is my text stored or sent anywhere?

No. It is analysed in your browser and disappears when you close the page.
